So the new Reading kit has been revealed on the official site and, in my opinion, it’s a case of being so close, yet so far. When I first heard that we were to have a new strip for the coming season, my first thought was ‘another one?’ as the current shirt had only been brought in at the beginning of last season. I didn’t buy it personally, so it doesn’t bother me, but I’d imagine that those who did were not best pleased to find that it had been reduced to £10 by the end of the season.
Yet it seems that in a bit to placate the fans, the club have managed to provide the one thing that Reading fans have been looking for in a strip for too long, real hoops. Not just horizontal stripes on the front of the shirt, but true hoops that go all the way around like the kits of old.
But onto this one and my first impression was one of disgust. What on earth is going on with that bib at the front? It just looks weird. When I looked at some more pictures though, it started to warm on me. The back of the shirt, in particular, is fantastic. Hoops, beautiful hoops. The front is great, except for that bib. What is the point of it? It doesn’t look good, it merely detracts from an otherwise beautifully simple shirt. I’d even let Waitrose off their hugely expanded sponsorship logo, if it wasn’t for that bib. This years effort? It’s close, but no cigar.
What are your thoughts? Will you be buying it?
